TPMS Query

Twice in the last month i have had a tyre pressure warning light illuminate on the dash.
Upon checking the tyres all are at desired pressure and none leak.
I can reset the warning using the option in the menu of the radio unit and all is well.
Query is - why would the warning light illuminate ? , is it a failing sensor ? , Would all five need replacing ( spare included ) ? .
Also a simply cannot get a straight answer from Ford or anywhere about which sensor type is fitted to the car, all they will tell me is that there are two types and they would need to remove one to find out which is needed, surely there has to be an easier way ?
Any help on this is appreciated.

yes there are two types, the early method of tpms used the rotation speed of the wheels, (using the abs sensor system).

the later system uses tyre mounted sensors, and can be identified by the valve stalks having a rib near the base.

you would only need to replace the one that has failed, and the system will relearn reasonably quickly, - though there is a procedure to force it to learn.

I think there is a way to identify the errant one, but I will have to look it up.

I don't think the spacesaver spare has a sensor, so a tyre warning will appear while using it.

Gremlin is quite correct, there are two types of sensor, one which uses ABS and a later one which has a pressure sensor mounted on the inside of the rim. I suspect yours is the later and the sensor has a battery with limited life.
The only fix is too replace the sensor.

A quick update --
I checked the pressure of all four tyres and found that they were all down by a pound or two.
I thought it odd that all four were down and it seemed unlikely that all four were punctured at the same time.
Then i had a think and realised that the only thing i had done to the tyres was to replace the valve caps with snazzy aluminium ones that matched the car colour.
Could that be the answer i thought, i removed them and pumped the tyres to correct pressure and put the original caps back on. I will run for a week or two and see if the light comes back on.
I will update in a week or so ,or before if the light returns.
Cheers for all the replies, much appreciated.

Is there a way to visually check which type is fitted ? I,E tyre mounted or using the abs sensor ?
Also i forgot to mention that my spare is a full size not a spacesaver.

the valve stems for the wheel mounted sensors should have a 'rib' on then.

I'm not sure but i don't think the stems on my wheels have the "rib" on them as in the picture. I'll have a closer look tomorrow to be sure.
Someone did tell me that the in wheel sensors are bolted to the wheel rim, so if you see a nut at the base of the valve stem then the in wheel ones are fitted.
I do not have that, my stems look normal.

This happened to me too (2014 B-Max). The sensors should have a battery life of 7 years and mine lasted 11. I found Kwik Fit very helpful. They can test to see which ones need replacing. I eventually had to have all four replaced at ÂŁ83 each.

I still say that i would never pay the high price mentioned above. i Would buy a stand along device that mounts onto the dash.

So after a week or two nothing showed on the dash.
Then today instead of the message about low tyre pressure i got an error of TPMS not detected, so looks like i may have to buy new ones and get them fitted or go down the route of an aftermarket kit.

Apparently they are expected to fail after 6-7yrs. I had a great garage who tested all four and advised me to get a set of 4 from Ford and my garage would fit them. For probably the one and only time a Ford part was cheaper than the universal ones that could be supplied.
