My wife has owned her B Max from new and just now, after 6 years of ownership we have soaking carpets on the offside.

At first we found it under the carpet by the control pedals and thought it was from there, but a local engineer found that it is actually first appearing in the rear passenger footwell and running forward as our drive is on a slope....so he replaced the double door seal to no avail.

We are at our witsend and have no idea where the water is originating from.

Just to mention we had the same issue in the boot last summer...the seal was replaced and that's fine now.....

Thanks Hywel, something to look at there, but as the water we find in the car is spotlessly clean I don't think it coming from those places. We feel it's rainwater rather than 'roadwater', but how it's getting into a rear passenger footwell is so far a mystery.


The carpets are lifted right out of the driver's side now so we can hopefully spot how it gets in, but it only seems to do so when the car is driven...leave it parked on the drive for several days and it stays dry as a bone.....

Someone in the last forum i was involved in made the suggestion to sprinkle talcum powder around the suspect areas.
When water enters it will leave an obvious trail as to where it origionated from.
It may help you.

I can now confirm that this is the SAME problem others have had...it was just that our sloping driveway let the water run into the drivers footwell and wick up the firewall soundproofing too!


The water actually enters the boot area from the wheel arch area passing a bit of black sticky tape to do so.....from here it can run into the spare wheel well or forwards past the rear seat mountings and into the rear passenger footwell....even going under a cross member to reach the front foot well.


On the way it passes a LOT of grey foam that it soaks into. Your carpet can be dry and its underlay soaked...your first symptom might just be a misting problem on cold windows.


I have yet to fix it, but it seems there can be multiple issues getting water into the inner wheel arch...rear light clusters leaking, rear air vents leaking and the three membranes curling with age and possibly some water sources connected to rear door rails.


Ford must have known of this problem as they put white wadding into the bottom of the inner wheel arch...this gets totally soaked and might well be a source of corrosion in time. The vents are crap, the wadding is a bodge and there are other possible sources of water too.


This reminds me of the Focus convertible all over agin...where Ford had to introduce specially trained engineers at dedicated dealerships to deal with complex water leak problems that were too time consuming and expensive for main dealers to cope with under warranty.
