So when I bought this car I traded my old one in. At the weekend I received a letter from The National Mileage Register saying they're conducting "a routine mileage investigation" on the car.

They want to know the mileage on the car when I bought it and the mileage on the car when I sold it.

I've bought a sold quite a few cars in my time but never seen this before.

The car has never been touched under my ownership and I hope it wasn't touched before I got it.

Had my last car a while too so I can't really remember most of the details.

Don't worry about it, it isn't a compulsary thing. They do it now and again, sometimes they may see an irragularity that spark off an investigation and at other times it is just a random check. If you can't remember, just tell them, or, don't reply to the letter.

It is usually as a result of the new owner or garage doing a HPI check, if HPI don't have any records they contact the previous owners.

Or perhaps it was clocked before or after you sold it.

Often, its just an irregularity that has cropped up like an incorrect mileage being written on an mot or tax renewal or a difference between the mileage shown when sold and purchased.

If youve done nothing wrong then there is nothing to fear and you should assist the authorities as much as you can.

It'll turn out to be a storm in a teacup, probably.

Thanks everyone, I completed all the form anyway and I've not heard anything back so I'm assuming that's a good thing!
