Auto gearbox broke(?)... :(

Hello everyone,
I'm new here, it's my first post

My wife has a 2014 B-Max 1.6 petrol with auto gearbox. We have that car since 2017. Today when I was driving it, it suddenly made a strange metallic noise (that characteristic sound when two metal cogwheels are misaligned or something) and the car jiggled a bit. I looked in the mirror and I think there was a bit of smoke too (I'm not sure it was related though).

From that moment it started behaving weirdly. It refused to accelerate, the revs went up, but then suddenly the car shoot forward (like the clutch eventually found the grip). I just wanted to return home safely, so I drove it slowly, but the car kept jiggling slightly. Then when I approached the roundabout and came to a full stop, the engine almost stalled and I couldn't accelerate again.

I eventually made it home and in the evening (when the car cooled down) I decided to take it for a short spin to see what was happening exactly. At first, everything seemed ok, but after a while, it made that metallic cogwheel sound again and started jiggling (it's not very strong, but noticeable), even though I kept my foot steadily on the accelerator.

Any idea what that might be and where I should start investigating the problem?

without more detail its difficult to diagnose, but I think probably a clutch failure.
note while its referred to as auto, its a preselect robot gearbox with twin clutches, one for odd and one for even gears.

as with all modern cars, the next thing to look at is error codes via obd.

Many thanks for your reply, I did that and unfortunately there is nothing related to the gearbox. Nothing that would give me any clue.

Here is what the ODB2 reported in the error codes:

Car Scanner ELM OBD2

I found this info online, not sure if it helps at all but it's worth checking if you haven't do so already. --

Possible Causes

Faulty Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module

Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module harness is open or shorted

Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module circuit poor electrical connection

U0423 Meaning

A Controller Area Network (CAN) is a vehicle bus standard designed to interconnect automotive devices without a host computer. Operating information and commands are exchanged among the devices. The devices have programmed information about what messages are needed to be exchanged on the serial data circuits. Some devices are constantly receiving information from other devices through serial data communication network. The invalid data Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) will be set when a receiving device detects a discrepancy in the information it receives from the Instrument Panel Cluster Control Module causing its integrity to be questioned.

Many thanks for all your replies.

I took the car to Hendy Ford, they diagnosed the clutch pack failure. It needs replacing. The bill: eye-watering 1,750 :’(

Next time I’ll buy a Toyota or something...

Whats the mileage mine is 2014 with 17000 on clock jerky now and again hope its not same problem.

B max 1.6 Titanium petrol panther black

Mine is 2014 with 38k miles on the clock. I asked them if I should service that clutch or the gearbox regularly (change the oil or something) and they said no (they said the gearbox was sealed for life). 1,750 is more or less 1/3 of the value of this car. It's ridiculous....

Buy the clutch pack yourself and get a good independant garage to fit it for you.
It's what i would do.

better to have them supply and fit, there is no way any garage would fit your supplied part, then give a decent warrantee. -
let them make some money on parts (as well as the labour) and give you a warrantee on the whole job

but if doing the job yourself, then take advantage of any parts discounts that you can.
